Life is good in the Heart of the South Shuswap
Looking for an Investment Property?
The Shuswap is one of the most popular recreational destinations in BC. Shuswap Lake offers unlimited water related recreational opportunities. The surrounding hills provide beautiful trails for all kinds of outdoor activities, and executive Golf courses lure golf enthusiasts to the South Shuswap. It's a preferred holiday area, and there are never enough holiday apartments to rent.
Sorrento, British Columbia, is an unincorporated town on the south shore of Shuswap Lake in the Southern Interior, located on the Trans-Canada Highway, just 33 km west of Salmon Arm and 75 km east of Kamloops.
The Secwepemc People (therefore the name Shuswap) have inhabited this beautiful area for over 10'000 years. Gold seekers and trappers settled in Sorrento in the late 18th century, then known as Trappers Landing. The hub of the place was up the hill in Notch Hill where the railway station provided access for sending and receiving goods. Now it's a Heritage site and home to Jim's Ford Corral Museum
A wealthy businessman from Montreal admired the area enough to settle permanently in Trappers Landing. Copper Island reminded the world traveller of the Isle of Capri, off of Sorrento, Italy, and he promptly renamed his new hometown Sorrento. Mr. James R. Kinghorn's house - Spes Bona - is now part of the Sorrento Centre, a retreat and conference facility well known for its special events, such as the Bluegrass Festival each August and the woodcarving school.

Uncountable reasons why I moved here
- I fell instantly in love with the beautiful green scenery and sparkly lakes of the South Shuswap. Once settled, I realised how temperate the climate really is, although a bit unpredictable. I experienced winters without much snow and winters with tons of snow, but compared to other regions (except the Okanagan) winter is relatively short.
- Accessibility: It's a 4-hour drive to Vancouver and a 6-hour drive to Calgary. Kelowna's International Airport is 1,5 hours away and the airport in Kamloops one hour. Weekend getaways are practically at the doorstep.
- 4-Season Playground: The South Shuswap is a paradise for all things outdoor. Pack lunch and enjoy the beaches, visit farmers markets or sample locally made cheese at Gort's and taste wine at the Granite Creek Estate and Recline Ridge vineyards just a few clicks off the highway. Sorrento is home to the only organic beer brewery in BC. Saddle up to explore the backcountry, pick fresh fruit at a local farm. Discover First Nation cultural sites (Switzmalph Nature Trail with a reconstructed winter village) or listen to the stories of the Adams Lake Band. Sun, swim, fish or boat. Paddle over to Copper Island, a favoured local cliff jump, and hike up to the top over well-maintained trails. It's also a geocatching destination.
- Golfers are blessed with a long season that can extend from mid March to well into October: Talking Rock Golf Course (18 holes, Par 72); Sunshore Golf Course (9 hole, Par 32); Shuswap Lake Estate Golf Course (18 holes, Par 71); Salmon Arm Executive Course (18 hole championship plus 9 hole course. 27 holes, Par72 - Les Furber designed); Hyde Mountain Golf course on Mara Lake (18 holes and one of BCs most scenic golf courses); Canoe Creek Golf Course (18 holes, Par 72).
- For alpine skiing I go to Sun Peaks, the beautiful downhill ski area near Kamloops that is only 64 km's from Sorrento; it's a 2-hour drive to Silverstar in Vernon and approx. a 4-hour drive to Big White, Kelowna's winter playground (well worth on a weekend). To the Revelstoke Ski area it's approx. a 2-hour drive.
- The Shuswap has many provincial parks and it's a paradise for hiking and biking - from low key to serious trails. I am captivated by the scenic green landscape and the magnificent mountain and lake vistas. Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park right across the lake offers a great recreational area and a fabulous trail along the Adams River, a BC Heritage River and home to the famous and largest Sockeye Salmon Run in North America.
- I didn't want to live in a big city but close enough to enjoy what a bigger city has to offer without having to drive for hours. Salmon Arm offers life theatre, concerts, cinemas, and festivals year round, and so does Kamloops - and both cities have bigger hospitals.
- Festivals throughout the year: Roots & Blues Festival in August, weekly WOW (Wednesday on the Wharf) concerts in Salmon Arm; the weeklong festival of the Arts in Sorrento, a 3-day annual Cowboy Festival in Kamloops, annual outdoor Pro Rodeos and Pow Wow's, Fall Fair Parade in Salmon Arm, the Falkland Stampede, the Okanagan celebrates its wine with 4 seasonal festivals, the Blue Grass Festival in Sorrento, the arrival of the annual Christmas train (stops in Salmon Arm, Notch Hill, Chase and Kamloops) - just to name a few.
- Vital Service: I hardly have to leave Sorrento: Dining, grocery stores, a health food store and pharmacy, post office, credit union (other banks in Chase and Salmon Arm), an assortment of specialty shops are all within walking distance. Fire department - the South Shuswap's First Responders - doctor's clinic (Hospital in Salmon Arm), dentist, auto repair shops, towing and recovery service, gas stations, IRLY Building centre, Cable and Wireless service and more. What's more, Sorrento is known for its artistic community. The Shuswap Festival of the Arts is one of the best in the interior. Sorrento Memorial Hall provides a venue for events throughout the year. High Country Potter's Sow on the long weekend in August showcases the best BC Potters, the Accordion Festival and so on. For almost three decades, the Sorrento Drop-In Society welcomes all newcomers.
- The Sorrento Blind Bay Community Park near downtown Sorrento offers baseball diamonds, batting cage, soccer fields, skating rink, tennis courts, picnic tables and shelter, toddler and youth playgrounds, parking, washrooms and a small hiking trail around the park.
Just one reason why I move away
- A global journey is waiting for me. I have no idea when or even if I will return.
So there, my Sorrento Condo is up for grabs!
