Travelling to Dangerous Places
By Fida Wild
"Can you advice me on what to read before I travel to Mexico?" my friend Don asked.
He was newly retired and eager to explore the world. Never before had he left Canada and he wanted to be prepared before his first foreign adventure.
I sent him on his way with books to read, Internet sites to explore, and a clinic address for advice on immunization.
A few days later he returned, discouraged, his look grave. He slumped his 6 foot 3 frame into my Muskoka chair and crumbled into a heap of hopelessness.
"I give up!" He quoted sources with disturbing news. "It's all just too dangerous. Unsafe water to begin with, a crime rate that gives me the shivers and don't get me started on the kidnapping thing. I would have to travel in first class busses. Hell, how much fun is that?" He added: "We don't know how lucky we are living in Canada and not in such unsafe and dangerous places."
By now, his face was the colour of a beet and I could see his heart beat at his temple. This gentle giant who had, literally, wrestled a moose (and won) and had black bears as next-door neighbours was crushed by Mexico's crime rate.
After much discussion and persuasion and listing 'safer' possibilities, he returned home a little more hopeful.
After two days, he called with a proud tone in his voice. "Guess what! I booked an all-inclusive trip to the Mexican Riviera. This way I can taste the waters and see if travelling is for me."
When I received a phone call with the news that Don was in the hospital, my heart sank. I called immediately but found him cheerful and all excited. "Madre de Dios" he blurted, "I thought I'd travel to a third world country. But staying in this hospital I realized I come from one!"
Last thing I heard from Don was that he was riding a chicken bus in Guatemala.
