Sculpting Festivals Fairs & Competitions Ice, Snow, Sand and Wood
Outdoor sculpting festivals fairs, exhibitions and competitions become more and more popular around the world. The start of ice sculpting dates back thousands of years - think Eskimos and their igloos. Sand sculptures have roots in ancient Egypt and India, recorded first in the 14th century. Sculpting for competitions started probably a bit more than 100 years ago. Ice, snow and sand sculptures can last a surprisingly long time. Outdoor sand sculptures can survive up to two years. Rain is not really damaging but tides and wind are. Snow and ice sculptures can survive for a few months until the thirsty sun starts to lick the sculptures away. The rich wood carving tradition has been with civilization the longest. The arrival of the chainsaw added a different dimension to it.
