The Quebec Winter Carnival
The World's largest Winter Carnival
Quebec Winter Carnival
Place Desjardins/Plains of Abraham, Quebec City, Canada
January - February

The Quebec Winter Carnival is not only an ice and snow sculpture festival - though ice sculptures and the "Bonhomme" are a big part of it - it's Canada's "Mardi Gras."
The immigrants brought the French tradition of Carnival - a word of Italian origin meaning "Mardi Gras" - with them and continued the custom of celebrating the end of January until mid February, right before Lent.
The first large winter Carnival in Québec City, the world's snow capital, took place in 1894. The annual celebration was interrupted by two wars, and the economic crisis of 1929.
In 1954 the "Bonhomme", the famous personality, was born and elected the event's representative. The first official edition of the Quebec Winter Carnival took place in 1955, and it has since snowballed into an undeniable manifestation of the ultimate winter celebration for the entire Québec City population.
The Quebec Winter Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world, and is third on the List of Top Carnivals after the famous carnivals of Rio and New Orleans.
